Jacobean Period, 1620-1690

The first furniture made in North America was based on the English Jacobean style. The distinctive feature of Jacobean furniture is the use of turned members. Characteristics such ringed-baluster turnings, boldly turned and scroll-carved stretchers, and vase shaped legs resting on knob or Spanish feet are attributed to this style period. The wood employed was mostly American oak, pine and maple.
