THE SOUTHWOOD STORY
Southwood was established in 1973. Three individuals with successful careers in furniture making, decided to form a “family company” and specialize in what they knew best – the recreation of beautiful upholstered chairs and sofas from the 18th and 19th century periods. There was a desire to not only recreate these treasures, but also to demonstrate that indeed excellence still existed in quality and craftsmanship.
In 1994, four partners acquired Southwood. They were committed to continuing the level of quality and service that Southwood was known for. With their experience and expertise, they have taken the company to new levels of excellence.
Skirted and leather upholstery has become an extremely important addition to the line and now represents the fastest growing segment of our company. Our skirted chairs, sofas, and leather upholstery achieve a variety of classical, traditional and transitional design choices, which is unequalled in the furniture industry. Each piece is made with “contract construction standards” to withstand heavy commercial use in fine hotels, country clubs, retirement homes, executive offices and embassies around the world. The strength of the Southwood line is in the opportunity to coordinate compatible styles in traditional, exposed wood style periods, with fabric or leather to create your own signature look with a statement that reflects your tastes and lifestyle.
The company purchased Southampton an occasional, traditional, and 18th century wood line. Southampton specializes in English reproductions, unique traditional styles, and hand painted pieces. Most of these items are designed and created at our factory in North Carolina. Our craftsmen and artists create beautiful hand painted pieces as well as authentic reproductions with the highest quality handwork anywhere. This combination has enabled Southwood to become a proud resource of high-end quality furniture.
We believe that quality and craftsmanship can best be fostered in the intimacy of a small, personal “family company”. The key ingredient in every upholstered chair and sofa is still the talent and skill of the individual who creates it. Southwood is especially enriched with some of the furniture industry’s most experienced craftsmen. Many are second, third, or fourth generation furniture makers. These are the people who care, people who take pride in their profession.
Excellence still exists.
